Is the most common tumour in the male. The cause is unknown, but there are various theories about what may “increase the likelihood” of its appearance: hormonal theory, family antecedents...
Currently we are living in an era in which thanks to technical advances, prostate cancer can be detected early and in many cases the patient can be offered effective treatment, with a cure rate of 80% amongst cancers that have not spread.
All men over the age of 50 should annually see an urology specialist, who will perform a rectal exploration and take a blood sample. In males of 45 years of age with direct family antecedents of prostate cancer, it is recommended to bring forward the specialist consultations to 45.
Blood analysis consists of the determination of a prostatic antigen better known as PSA; which leads to the early detection of prostate cancer. If at a glance there were any alterations in the results or if your specialist had any doubts, the urologist would proceed with a prostatic biopsy.
If the result of the biopsy was to show prostate cancer, depending on the type of tumour, the urologist will offer you various treatments which will include:
Radical surgery of the prostate cancer
Brachytherapy
External radiotherapy
