Gain quality of life without losing a second of it
Traditionally, the role of doctors has been that of diagnosing and treating all types of illnesses. However, and for some time now, this role has been significantly changing to another approach that our society insistently demands: the improvement in people’s quality of life. But how?
Prevention means living better and longer
By means of early detection, together with the progressive improvement of therapeutic techniques, the different illnesses that may appear with the passage of the years can be prevented. And increasingly amongst them are urological pathologies in the male and other related pathologies. Due to this, early detection and in one sole integral consultation, is the best insurance for a healthier quality of life.
The example of Women
This objective has been satisfactorily achieved in the case of women with Menopause Units and Women’s Care Centres. Integral medical services attended by women in both the pre-menopause stage and active stage of menopause as well as those looking for an early detection programme for different diseases such as gynaecological cancer.
Add health, subtract problems
Patients with urological problems tend to also manifest other pathologies such as high blood pressure, coronary failure, heart rhythm disorders, heart failure... That is why it is necessary to create units that prevent urological disorders in particular, and other pathologies that derive as a group. Consultations in which the transformations that will take place with age are explained, together with how to face them, and where the need to live a healthier life, giving up harmful habits, is conveyed.
Five pathologies, one more reason to visit us
While it is certainly true that the life expectancy enjoyed by men in Spain is amongst the highest in Europe, different studies show constant concern about passing the 45/50 years of age barrier. This is due more to psychological than physical factors. But it is also true that it is at that age that the organism begins to require more attention.
From that age onwards the risk levels start to become higher, and it is increasingly common for males to suffer from one of the most common five pathologies:
· Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia. From the age of 50, the prostate begins to develop benign prostatic hyperplasia or benign growth, which in enlarging may obstruct the urethra and make urinating difficult.
· Prostate cancer. This is the most common tumour in the male. If it is detected early, there are effective treatments and in many cases the cure rate can reach up to 80%. From the age of 50, all males should see an urologist every year for a full check-up.
· Erectile dysfunction or impotence. 10% of the adult male population presents some degree of this dysfunction, with it climbing to 50% in men over 70. Various studies have shown, unlike those who believe it to be caused by psychogenic factors, that the origin of the problem is often organic and frequently linked to vascular risk factors such as high blood pressure, hypercholesterolemia or an increase in cholesterol in the blood, smoking and diabetes.
· Late Onset Hypogonadism Syndrome due to lack of testosterone. 52% of men between the ages of 44/74 present symptomology of the so-called andropenia or andropause. With the drop in testosterone levels, there are changes in attitude and mood, a greater degree of fatigue, loss of energy as well as loss of sexual drive and physical agility. In addition, between the ages of 40 and 70, bone density diminishes up to 15% due to the loss of testosterone.
· Ischemic cardiopathy. Recent studies point to an intimate association between low levels of testosterone and an increase in cardiovascular risk.
